Winemakers often fret over the elements that make a vintage challenging but some years, it’s when you overcome the challenge (after challenge) you end up creating wines that are fun to sip. The 2022 grape harvest was on course for a mid-September pick with the Brix, sugar, slightly increasing day to day. Then mother nature decided to throw a curve ball: Five excessively hot days followed by a complete 180° with twelve days of cooler weather and then a two-inch rain storm. During a heat wave, there is an increase of Brix due to dehydration of the fruit, so we rely heavily on acidity levels and flavor. We waited 7 days to pick the fruit, allowing for rebalance and the acids to further drop. After pressing and cold fermentation, our oak maturation program adds complexity to the aromas and flavors and preserves the bright fruit and natural acidity that make this Sauvignon Blanc so refreshing and palatably exciting. The resulting wine has a spring nose of rose clover and dill, a generous mouthfeel woven with tropical notes of kiwi and gooseberry, and its balance of acid, sweetness, and dryness is much like a sunkissed grapefruit.
